Modem Bank Security System
Challenge: A data service reseller
was plagued by 'bandit' users driving up telephone access
costs, and causing legitimate users to receive busy signals.
The data service provider was unwilling to provide improved
security to assist the reseller.
Action: Designed a Call Discriminating
System to be installed between the modem bank and data
concentrator. The unit monitored each logon attempt, disconnected
unauthorized callers, and logged the failed attempt to
a printer.
Result: The reseller recovered
the $30,000 cost of the unit in three months of reduced
telephone charges, and enjoyed equivalent monthly cost
savings after that period. Quality of service to legitmate
customers was also improved by freeing up otherwise busy
lines.
